Yes, Ponytails Can Cause Hair Loss

ponytails hairlossSometimes, I get lazy at night. I don’t want to wash my face and I just want my hair out of the way. So, I pull it back it a ponytail. I know this is bad. Not for my sleep, but for my hair. If you consider the hours that my head rubs against the pillow in that ponytail, it cannot be good. And according to experts in Dermatology, I am not too off base. Although many things contribute to hair damage and hair loss, one of the most common reasons we lose hair is due to poor cosmetic grooming decisions.

When we choose to color, style, brush, and even scratch our hair too often we are often deciding to damage our hair – even if we did not know it. One doctor explained that, “Hair damage is the result of trauma to the physical structure of the hair that occurs every day.” There is no trauma more common that the hair experiences than the ponytail. The tight rubber band often pulls the hair, tangles it, and places the hair under stress.

If your hair is experience more hair loss than you would prefer, consider letting your hair hang loose. Opt out of the ponytail. Embrace the carefree, flowing styles that are healthier for your hair.
